Description

Antique Sonneberg-type papier mâché head doll, made in Germany circa 1880–1910, measuring about 25 inches tall. She has a painted papier-mâché head with blue eyes, closed mouth, and blond wig (tag notes replaced in 1994). The doll has a cloth body with composition lower arms, blue cotton stockings sewn to the legs, and painted or oilcloth boots.

She wears a black sheer overdress over an ivory cotton underdress with lace hem, blue striped stockings, and black boots, finished with a small pendant necklace. The original paper tags remain attached, referencing Jan Foulke’s Blue Book of Dolls & Values (10th edition, page 341) and provenance from Ruth Kellson, Denver, Iowa (1993 purchase, $100).

Condition details:

Head: stable with expected wear and age craquelure, no major breaks.

Arms: paint wear and one chipped fingertip (see photos).

Body: age spotting and seam stress typical for its age.

Clothing: age toning and minor wear; cleaned in 1994 per tag.

Wig replaced in 1994; not original.

A fine example of a late 19th-century Sonneberg papier-mâché doll, rarely found in this large size and with documented provenance.
