Description
Rare circa-1940 King Sportswear varsity letter cardigan from Merrill High School in Merrill, Iowa, originally owned by student Kenneth Utesch. Research assistance from the Plymouth County Historical Museum identified Utesch in the 1940 Merrill High School yearbook as a sophomore and member of the Class of 1942, providing exceptional provenance for this surviving school garment.
The sweater features a large chenille M, double sleeve stripes, button front, two patch pockets, and Utesch's name chain-stitched on an interior label. It was retailed through Dwight Hauff Sporting Goods of Sioux City, whose founder had previously taught and coached at Merrill High School. This approximately 85-year-old sweater remains highly displayable but has age-related moth holes, thinning and loose threads/stitching as photographed.
